I've won!

50,059 words!

I ended with Cadmus pondering his altar and the fact that he...just shed some tears! I know, what the hell, right? I thought the same thing yesterday when I wrote it. That's pretty much why I stopped writing, because I was angry with the story at it heading in that direction so soon. But, the story knows better than I. As the Cylons would say, "All this has happened before, and all of it will happen again."

Honestly though, I can't believe I've finished early, especially after being so sick for so long. I attribute part of it to my sharpening my speed skills with those Date stories. I was pumping out two and three thousand words a day at times with those, so 1667 words was really not an issue for me. I was ridiculously ahead when I fell ill and used my reserve to fortify my word count, so I was never really behind like I thought I was.

I'm about 20,000 words away from actually finishing The Blood Crown. I'm going to continue writing on it today but, tomorrow, I have a review to write for Lighterthief's EP, Hard Listening. The release is on 1 December, and I promised Stuart Rowe I'd have the review for him to spread around at the time of the release. And, no, I haven't been procrastinating on this. I just got the press kit today, so I'm jumping on this to help the Lighterthief crew out...and Barry Andrews, of course. ::big wicked grin:: I've already forwarded the press kit to the contacts I still have in the music business, asking them to spread it around like warm butter.

After the reviews, I've promised [info]acook I would write a collaborative J-fic with [info]gunslingaaahhh that involves Femme Joker (you'll just have to wait and see what that's all about) and Batman. We'll be working on that in December. Once that's done, my J-fic writing days will come to a conclusion. I think that's rather fitting, since I saw the movie last December and began writing fics in January. I'll just end it all on my kind of one year anniversary. The Joker Blogs are also coming to an end soon, so it all works out nicely in the Great Scheme of Things.

Then it will be back to The Blood Crown with a vengeance. I want to finish as soon as I can so I can go directly into The Augury of Gideon. I'm in a serious mood to write my Vampires, particularly Cadmus Pariah and the mortated (that's a word in my book ~ mortation - the transformation of a Vampire back into mortal form) Faust, now going by his mortal name Kallum. Writing "The Sainted Confessor" almost killed me, but it also kind of redeemed me writing-wise, and it gave me the key to writing The Augury of Gideon, so I'm excited. Very excited indeed and absolutely, all billshat aside.

I don't know what 2010 will bring, except a new Shriekback album I wholly intend to help promote to the full extent of my resources and abilities, but I do know I'll be writing my way through it all, and still looking for that elusive publisher. There's so much more for Cadmus to do...to so many people. I'll close with this, because I can - ha ha ha!

Cadmus had broken the Circle long before. He’d stood shortly after Kelat’s speech and walked away from the other Vampires. Let them remain in solemnity, wallowing in fairy tales and dead religions. He was outcast. He would embrace his station and leave them to it. He stood at a secret window in the sanctuary, staring up into the infinity of the stars that watched over this lush garden of a planet, a bounty to both human and Vampire, and especially to Cadmus Pariah. The whites of his eyes shimmered in the pale light, but the iris and pupil absorbed even the faintest of beams. He’d spent centuries listening to people praise the ethereal beauty of his eyes, how alien and magnetic they were. Many of these same people had had their souls ripped from them by way of those magnificent, measureless eyes. He felt every one of them now, and heard them too, whispering still in desperation for release.

Brrrrr...

Why I'm not having uneasy dreams about this is beyond me...

Thing is, the actor who voices Dr. Steinman (I think he got the part because of his smooth baritone) is not known for playing villains... He's been a judge on a couple of the Law & Order shows... I would not be surprised if he played a doctor on some medical drama... have a sneaky feeling he probably enjoyed this "Did somebody order a LARGE HAM?" role...

I know, I know, wait 'till I get to Fort Frolic... Sander Cohen (who sounds a little like Jeffrey Combs, funnily enough) makes Dr. Steinman look like Luka from ER...

But in any case, I think I have an idea for a Halloween costume for next year... I just wonder if the doctor's smock (and where do you find one of those nowadays?) is red because of blood... if it were... it'd be more brownish, I dare say. And of course, to differentiate him from the other Splicers who happen to be running around in surgical smocks...

Rakenerok 3: The Final Rakeoning

Posted by [info]linus52 on 11.27.2009 at 14:29
Despite the dreariness and the promise of rain, I mustered the strength
and determination to rake the back yard for the 3rd time. This time it
was almost all willow leaves, and they were wet. The bonus to that is
they pack into bags better- the downside of course is the bags are HEAVY
when full. BUT... the back yard is now raked and bagged again. This
ought to be the last raking of the season.

Picture, this:

EJ, sitting on the potty chair.

Singing *almost perfectly* the melody to "Frère Jacques".

this one:
"Frère Jacques, frère Jacques,
Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous?
Sonnez les matines! Sonnez les matines!
Ding, dang, dong. Ding, dang, dong."

That, right there. That's the moment. That's one of my "little things". That's worth the price of admission right there. :-)

The angry women are in, and I was able to use all the recordings that were submitted. The new song, Ho Is On The Rag, is now available as a free download over at The FuMP.

The song is a parody of Throw It In The Big by Fabolous and features me singing! OK, so it's heavily AutoTuned thanks to Chris Mezzolesta, but it's me singing none the less. Go check it out. And please listen to the song before just assuming that I'm a sexist jerk. :)

IStolen from the very generous [info]circumspectly, who let go of the survey when I showed her my gun. ;)

You know how sometimes people on your friendslist post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out.

1. First Name: Tracy

2. Age: 42.

3. Location: Duncan, SC, right smack in-between Greenville and Spartanburg (those two cities are on easy to find on the map) in what's called the Upstate. So, if you look at a map, you'd look at the left-hand corner of the the triangle that is South Carolina. There's the Upstate. And that is where I'm currently trapped like rabid weasel in a maze...or something like that.

4. Occupation: Pre.. Actually, I'm waiting on disability benefits, having a host of health problems that just piled on top of me one after the other that prevents my working. And it drives me crazy because I, despite my issues with the Pit, I actually liked working in and of itself. I miss the independence and the money. Gah!

5. Partner(s): Don't have one, don't want one. Thankssss...

6. Kids: Oh, negatory, good buddy! I don't do children. Don't like them, don't want them, don't need them, can't stand them. Yet, somehow, when they're around me, they always like to hang out with me. This is with me telling them to go away and leave me alone. They just laugh and hang around. Evil, they are.

7. Brothers/Sisters: I am an only child, although I adopted a little brother (kinda sorta ha ha) earlier this year, probably against his will, but some things can't be helped.

8. Parents: Mother Unit, Terry. Father Unit, Everette (deceased). Adopted mother, Aunt Tudi. Step-mother, Mary. It took a lot of people to raise me, but they say it takes a village, so there you go.

9. Pets: Cats: 4 - Smidgen (marmalade mackerel tabby stumpy manx), Shmoop (grey tiger-stripe tabby with Darth Maul facial markings. She's constantly talking, so her nickname is Yappy McShmoop), Aloysius (long-hair grey mackerel tabby with a side-ways jaw. It was broken and set wrong because he didn't come home in time enough to get it set properly. He now looks like Pete Puma when you look directly at him as a result. He can eat and function just fine though, so it's okay), Steve (marmalade tiger-stripe tabby. He's shy and not big on small talk...). Dogs: 4 - Chester (Blue and Gold Yorkshire Terrier. Asshole supreme. Registered name is Winchester Napoleon. He lives up to his middle name), Riley (Wire-hair Dachshund. He's completely demented. He bites), Sheba (Cocker/Bassett mix. Aunt Tudi's dog. She's a sweetheart, but dumb as a box of pebbles), Toby (aka Toblerone and Sister Ubiquita of Our Lady of the Fuzzy Knuckles. He was a rescue from Dr. Patch's office. He was left there by his former "companion," who never came to pick him back up. Everyone hated him, so I brought him home. I then found out why everyone hated him. He's insufferable, clingy, obnoxious, aggressive, and basically the physical manifestation of Ren Hoek. Yes, he's a Chihuahua of some sort. He has a green sweater and a wimple. He has doubts).

10. List the 3-5 biggest things going on in your life:

  1. I'm writing my second novel and now have an editor who's going to start working on my first novel after December.
  2. I'm waiting on DSS's decision on my disability and hoping I don't have to get a lawyer.
  3. I'm working to help wrap up The Joker Blogs. There's only a few episodes left until the Big Reveal!
  4. I'm working on rescuing my BarryAndrews.net domain from Yahoo so I can relaunch it with a different host. Am also aiming to seek out some capable web designers to help me make it fabulous.
  5. I'm trying to compile all my notes in preparation to start the third book in The Vampire Relics as soon as I finish the second one.

I come across as not very thankful or friendly at times. Today is the day to at least rectify the thankful portion of my transgressions. This is a tad late, but I've been a tad busy, so better late than never, eh wot?

Things for which I am thankful:

  • Food and Shelter

  • The menagerie, even though they drive me crazy sometimes

  • Cheerwine!

  • My computer and the Internet

  • My vast collection of notes and art

  • The books on my bookshelves

  • The ION, which is still running without problems (knock on wood)

  • My health, now that it's back!

  • Live Journal and all my physical journals

  • My movie collection and Netflix, without which I would go mad

People for which I am thankful:

  • Aunt Tudi

  • The Mother Unit

  • My Friend Todd

  • Steph

  • Travis

  • Little Michael

  • Barry Andrews

  • [info]gunslingaaahhh

  • [info]luvthyjoker

  • Scott

  • Barack Obama

  • The Joker Blogs crew

  • Timothy

  • The Writers' Cabal

  • Everyone in my Tribe, and you know who you are

  • All my online friends, especially here on LJ ~ you're my cyber-family and I love you.

So there you go. Thank you, Mighty Ones, for everything and everyone. I hope I someday live up to the bounty you've bestowed up on me.

How long before the L-tryptophan kicks in...?

That was a first... Thanksgiving dinner served at about dinnertime... usually it's more like Thanksgiving late lunch.

Anyway...

I was a vegetarian for most of 2005, but Thanksgiving kind of ended that. Um. I think about it, though. I was taking a look at some of the meatless substitutes at Wegmans... Tofurky, of course, and then something called Quorn, and Field Roasts... I'd heard of the Tofurky, but not the other two, and I'm more partial to Morningstar Farms and Garden Burger myself, really... Only thing is, any vegetarian stuff that is made to somewhat resemble meat is often high in sodium. Better off just having the veggies and no pseudo-meat veggie product, it looks like.

Wonder about maybe one year doing the "Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant" thing... but I don't know.

Two years ago round this time I was doing the NaNoWriMo thing. Didn't do it last year... Not doing it this year... don't know if it's because I'm working or, well... um.

They deep-fried a turkey at my work yesterday, but it was pretty much gone when I got to it. Nibbled a little scrap which did taste fried. Turkey gone, but two big aluminum pans of green beans and mashed potatoes still pretty full. Hmmm...

I hate to say it, but my biggest obstacle to enjoying the film version of Stardust is my utter indifference to Claire Danes. And I don't think my never getting into My So-Called Life like normal people did had anything to do with it (I didn't want to be reminded of high school, so I avoided it as much as I could)... I don't dislike her... but I don't like her, either. I don't know why.

Um.

So while I've been playing Bioshock and reading up on it, have discovered that, of course, where there's fanbases for a thing, there's... interesting things that come out of said fanbase. It's not too hard to come up with a Splicer costume... some period clothing, a little makeup, fake blood, appropriate props like a blunt instrument and a mask, and boom, Splicer (the "Baby Jane" seems popular. methinks). And then you've got some people for whom a Splicer costume doesn't cut it... next thing you know you're at Dragon*Con or someplace and there's a Big Daddy lumbering down the hallway with a Little Sister leading it by the hand... and the drill works... you give him room, and not just because he's virtually blind inside that thing...

Costumes are fun, yes, but... how about props? I think the people behind the Bioshock games (sequel comes out next year!) might have created a prop of the EVE syringe as a fuzzy for a special edition of Bioshock 2, but I'm not really sure. I was thinking about props of the weapons... namely, the guns after they've been upgraded (the shotgun has little gears turning on its side), and then there's those vending machines... "CIRCUS OF VALUES! HA HA HA HA HA!"

Off to play Bioshock... maybe...

I never go through a Thanksgiving without thinking of the return letter Todd and I got in the mail while still working for the Readers Digest division of BMG. It was written phonetically by an obviously non-native English speaker. I remember it perfectly and transcribe it here for you.

I do not laik musick in mai laif. I hef beth laif in trable. -- Teng You

We were working overtime that night and spent a good thirty minutes of BMG's precious time slumped on the desk in literal hysterics. Yes, we had to wipe out eyes. Or..yes, we hed to waip owr ai's. That was in 1991 I think because I recall working a lot of overtime to help Todd with returns letters during the time "Walk on the Ocean" was popular. Oh, and speaking of "Walk on the Ocean," it was also during working overtime that I called the radio station to request that song, not knowing a contest was going on. I ended up being the correct caller and winning two tickets to a male strip show. All I wanted was my freakin' song. I gave the tickets to a coworker and ended up buying the Toad the Wet Sprocket album.

Another odd memory of those days was the BMG open house in 1988. Todd and I were grabbed by this person in an elephant costume and we had a picture taken. We never found out who was in the costume and, years later, still got a little freaked out by it. "Attacked by Furries!" on Fox News at 10!

Why do these memories flood forth now? Perhaps it's because I'm high on coffee. Perhaps it's because I got a good night's sleep for once in forever. Perhaps it's because I miss Todd and miss happier days. Perhaps it's all of the above combined with the fact it's Tengsgiving. I often wonder about the person who wrote that letter. How can you not laik musick in your laif? I cannot imagine.

On a wholly different matter, [info]luvthyjoker showed me the trailer to the upcoming film Daybreakers. While I'm excited about seeing this (Sam Neill as a Vampire, hello?), I'm also a little ticked off because they're using a concept that I use in The Vampire Relics: the idea of humans as blood herds for Vampires (or at least for Cadmus). Just last night I touched upon this again as I wrote furiously for NaNo:

Someday, though…someday, he would be strong enough to overcome her and feed her to her own chalice. And then he would take the Great Hive and make it his personal herd, feeding on the Vampires one after the other until the vermin were removed from the planet forever. And then he would start on the humans, feeding them to the chalice, transforming their blood and drinking his fill. The Earth would be his hunting ground and woe would be uttered by every living thing at his behest.
Now, I've got tons of notes that pre-date this movie by a good twenty years, so I'm not changing a damned thing, they can't make me! Besides, it's not like the world is full of Vampires. It's just this one lone black hole of a Vampire who plans to devour the entire planet someday. Same basic concept, different direction. And that's only his aim, anyway. We still aren't sure if he'll ever succeed.

You know, on NCIS when they show the opening credits, when they get to David McCallum's credit, they always show that shot of him in his scrubs twirling a stick, which I presume he did to demonstrate something... like how a murder weapon was wielded, or something like that...

Which episode is that from?

Neptune's Bounty

Posted by [info]serizawa3000 on 11.25.2009 at 20:26

Out of Medical... which was damn freaky.

And the stuff with the Little Sisters and their Big Daddies has begun in earnest.

I can't bring myself to "harvest" the Little Sisters. I don't get as much ADAM, but...

Dr. Steinman... brrr...

I contemplated the corpse of the first Big Daddy I successfully brought down and didn't feel like I'd done a good thing. Strange... One moment I'm shooting a corpse on a gurney to make sure it is a corpse... and next... The Little Sister saying "Thank you" and running off is a little solace... but very little.

Don't like bringing down the Big Daddies... and not because they're really tough to bring down...

The Splicers? They really are out to get you... but a Big Daddy's just doing his job.

For something so honking big, the Big Daddies are fast...

And that was just a Bouncer-class Big Daddy. The close-quarters combat Big Daddy. Comes charging in to tackle you, clobber you, use that honking big drill...

No sooner do I get to Neptune's Bounty... there's a Rosie. The Rosie is the ranged-combat Big Daddy. Throwing grenades and sniping at you with a giant rivet gun (hence the name Rosie)...
